Our Coaching Philosophy

The Structural Sports coaching method is built on a simple belief

instruction by demonstration

We believe that kids will learn more from what they see than what they hear.

We take this approach in all aspects of our training including sport skill and life skill related lessons

Our Guiding Light

How we provide instruction is as important as what instruction we provide

Darren has spent the last 17 years coaching various youth sports in the Seattle area including Flag Football, Little League and Select Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Tackle Football. For the past 16 years Darren has worked with both his sons along with many local young athletes in developing solid fundamental skills in various sports. As a coach Darren has led his youth football teams to the playoffs every year including a shutout victory over a 7-0 #1 seeded team in 2013. Born and raised in the Southeast Darren grew up in a sports family. Coached by his father, who played football for the University of Miami, he started playing football and basketball at 8 years old and took his football career all the way through his junior year in high school before being sidelined with a shoulder injury as a senior. While attending Florida State University he met and eventually married his college sweetheart Deanna, a University of Miami student and huge football fan. Sports and coaching have always been a major part of his life.

While helping his older son Nick prepare for his senior year of football at Skyline High School Darren was exposed to the unique training methods of Taylor Barton and his Barton Football Academy staff. He became so convinced of the value of focused fundamental training that in 2009 Darren briefly joined Taylor and among other things, designed a youth football fundamental skills training program. Darren's desire to introduce young athletes, at the very beginning of their sports journey, to the value of solid fundamentals led to the creation of Structural Sports. In 2014 Darren expanded Structural Sports fundamental training programs to include basketball. Darren worked for Microsoft for 12 years and is currently a consultant in the high tech industry with Revel Consulting.

Darren was a member of the Skyline High School coaching staff and coached various positions as a member of the staff including RB, LB, OL, and DL. He lives in Sammamish, WA and has been married to his wife Deanna for over 20 years. He has 4 children, Nick, Cameron, Addison and Lauren.
